What Is a Sight Glass Valve and How Does It Work?
A sight glass valve or flow sight glass gives operators a direct view of fluid condition or movement through a process line. It is an observation device rather than a calibrated flow meter, and every wetted and pressure-retaining component must suit the service.

What operators can observe
Depending on the configuration and process, a sight glass can help confirm the presence or movement of liquid, color, clarity, bubbles or an interface. What can be judged reliably depends on lighting, orientation, process conditions and the viewing area.
Common inline viewing configurations
Designs may provide viewing from one or more sides, a tubular viewing section or a body with opposed windows. Connection style, required visibility, line orientation, pressure boundary and maintenance access influence which arrangement is appropriate.
Sight glass valve versus glass-lined valve
A sight glass is selected to provide visibility into the process. A glass-lined valve uses a protective glass lining on wetted surfaces for service compatibility; it may not provide a viewing window. The terms answer different needs and should not be combined in an RFQ without clarification.
Service information needed for selection
State the fluid, concentration where relevant, pressure, temperature, line size, end connection, body material, viewing element requirement, gasket compatibility, orientation and cleaning method. Also describe exactly what the operator needs to see.

How to Select a Sight Glass Valve for Industrial Service
A buyer guide for sight glass valves, flow sight glasses, viewing elements, body materials and industrial flow observation applications.
Read the buyer guideFrequently asked questions
Does a sight glass measure flow rate?
A standard sight glass provides visual indication, not a calibrated flow-rate measurement. A separate instrument is needed when quantified flow is required.
Can a sight glass be used for corrosive liquids?
Potentially, but the body, viewing element, gaskets and any lining must be checked against the exact chemical, concentration, pressure and temperature.
What is the most useful information for a sight glass enquiry?
Include line size, connection, service fluid, pressure, temperature, materials, orientation, required viewing style, quantity and any project datasheet or drawing.
