What Is a Plate Strainer and What Is Its Purpose?
A plate strainer is a perforated or mesh-supported element placed in a flow path to capture debris before it reaches downstream equipment. Its purpose is equipment protection, not fine filtration, and its geometry must suit the line, expected debris and allowable pressure loss.

How a plate strainer protects equipment
Fluid passes through openings in the straining element while debris larger than the selected opening is retained. The element creates resistance as it collects debris, so inspection and cleaning plans are part of the selection rather than an afterthought.
Temporary and continuing-service use
Temporary strainers are often installed during commissioning or line cleaning to catch construction debris. A strainer intended to remain in service needs an arrangement suited to normal flow, debris loading, differential pressure monitoring and safe cleaning access.
Plate, cone and basket terminology
A flat plate, cone or basket shape may be selected depending on available space, required open area and installation method. The phrase strainer plate can also describe an internal perforated support in other equipment, so a drawing is important when the request concerns a pressure vessel rather than an inline pipeline strainer.
Inputs needed to define the strainer
Provide line size, connection or flange details, material, perforation or mesh requirement, expected flow, fluid, debris type, pressure and temperature conditions, installation direction and whether the duty is temporary or continuing.

Read the buyer guideFrequently asked questions
Why is a plate strainer installed before a pump?
It can help intercept debris that could damage or obstruct the pump, provided the strainer is sized for the flow and monitored so blockage does not starve the pump.
Is a plate strainer the same as a filter?
Both remove material from a flow, but a plate strainer is generally used for coarser debris protection. The required particle retention and process duty determine the appropriate equipment.
What does open area mean for a strainer?
Open area is the total available flow area through the element openings. It affects velocity and pressure loss and should be reviewed with flow and fouling expectations.
