What Is an Air Header Distribution System?
An air header distribution system takes one plant or instrument air inlet and provides several individually controlled outlet points. It creates an organized way to supply pneumatic instruments and makes individual branches easier to isolate for maintenance.

What an air header does
A common inlet feeds a header body with multiple take-off points. Each outlet can include its own isolation valve, allowing one instrument branch to be worked on without necessarily disturbing every connected branch. The actual isolation plan must still follow the plant procedure and approved layout.
Where air headers are used
Air headers are commonly found near instrument racks, control valve stations, analyzer shelters, skids and utility panels. Their role is distribution rather than air preparation, so filtration, regulation and drying are handled elsewhere when the system design requires them.
- Pneumatic actuator and valve-positioner supply points
- Instrument and analyzer air branches
- Packaged equipment and utility panels
- Grouped take-off points where branch isolation is useful
Air header, air manifold and inlet header terminology
Air header and instrument air manifold are often used for the same distribution function, although project drawings may define the terms differently. An inlet header can also describe a larger upstream line. Buyers should use the project tag, drawing and connection schedule instead of relying on the name alone.
Details that define the required assembly
Outlet count, inlet and outlet connections, material, design pressure, operating temperature, valve arrangement, drain point, mounting method and available space all affect the configuration. A marked-up sketch is especially useful when outlet direction or spacing matters.

Read the buyer guideFrequently asked questions
Is an air header the same as an air receiver?
No. An air header distributes a supply to several branches. An air receiver stores compressed air and helps provide system capacity.
How many outlets can an air header have?
The outlet count is selected for the connected instruments and spare-point policy. Buyers should state the required active and spare outlets rather than assume a standard count.
What should be included in an air header enquiry?
Include service, outlet count, inlet and outlet sizes, connection standards, material, pressure and temperature conditions, mounting arrangement, drain requirement and quantity.
